Puisaye, Joseph, count de
(1755-1827)
   military figure
Born in Montagne, Joseph, count de Puisaye was a deputy for the nobility to the estates general (1789) and initially supported the revolution of 1789. After the proscription of the Girondins (June 2, 1793), he took part in the federalist insurrection of the Eure. Defeated, however, at Pacy-sur-Eure (July 1793), he emigrated to England from where he led, with British support, the disembarking of émigrés at Quiberon, Brittany (June-July 1795). While the majority of the émigrés were killed, Puisaye succeeded in returning to the British squadron offshore. He left his Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire du parti royaliste (1808).
